RECALL - Location Based Services - Reconnecting Excluded Communities and Lifelong Learning is a project financed by European Union within Long Life Learning programme and joins partners from 4 countries: United Kingdom, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. The coordinator is Nottingham Trent University from UK. Official website: www.recall-project.eu
Duration: November 2009 – October 2012
Target groups:
The target disadvantaged groups are people of all ages with learning disabilities, those with specific learning difficulties, and those with sensory & mobility impairments. Many will have the additional disadvantages of being from BME communities and/or living in super output areas of multiple deprivations. The target groups face barriers in accessing community based lifelong learning activity due to lack of independent travel skills and their vulnerability in the community. Anxiety of carers around personal safety issues increases their exclusion and isolation.
Short description:
This project will develop location based services in assistive technologies to allow people with learning disabilities and sensory impairments to plan and independently carry out their route to work and community activities to overcome physical and psychological barriers to independent travel and community inclusion.
This RECALL ICT application is being designed for the Android Operating System, currently limited in availability but several mobile phone companies have confirmed they plan to release phones using Android in 2009. Three modes of RECALL will be implemented and tested which allows our target audience to plan, rehearse and then actually reconnect with learning, employment and other community opportunities. This approach combines location based services with games based learning approaches. The Plan mode promotes User Created Content and allows RECALL to be personalised to users’ needs. The Challenge mode uses games based learning approaches and context awareness to engage users in rehearsing, reflecting on and reinforcing the ways in which they have planned their reconnection with these opportunities. The Usage mode also offers self directed learning opportunities by specifying and personalising the key community and road safety messages that they require to be triggered by location.
Main activities:
- To research and understand the problems facing our target audience
- to identify design requirements for the 3 modes of RECALL
- Design and embedding of accessibility features for Android SO
- Iteratively test and refine the 3 modes of RECALL
- Set up case studies to pilot materials
- To disseminate and exploit the project results
Main results:
- 5 User Groups of people with disabilities
- 4 needs analysis report, one per each country
- One Mobile Application on the Android Operating System with 3 modes
- Testing Report
- Summary Piloting Results
- Quality Assurance and External Evaluation Report
- Accessible Project Website
